The Royal Tree Lodge Private Reserve boasts an impressive variety of both plains game for viewing as well as our phenomenal birdlife of over 300 species. Our resident fish eagles will surely capture your heart with their melodic cry as they soar overhead. Our personable and expert seasoned guides will share their vast knowledge of wildlife while guests explore in comfortable open game viewing vehicles and enjoy sunsets near the watering hole!
Our well marked nature trails allow our guests the unique experience to safely explore our private reserve and get in touch with its serene beauty and tall Ilala palms on the flood plains. Stretch your legs after or before a long flight while safely taking in the wonder of our wooded forest and diverse grasslands. Guests will enjoy game sightings and abundant bird life on their back to nature adventure. The reserve is free of predators allowing our guests to safely enjoy guided or unguided nature walks in this diverse and timeless piece of Africa!
Nature Trail Bike Ride
Choose an early morning or afternoon bike ride on our well marked nature trails. Offering off-road fat tire safari bikes & biking helmets for individuals, couples, or families with children! Choose guided or self-guided adventures on our exciting nature trails where you are sure to create lasting African memories of the bush and game sightings. Please note: bike excursions must be booked in advance!
Professionally guided horse safari’s on our private reserve are exhilarating. These beautiful well-behaved horses will enable you to ride amongst the plains game and get very close to view giraffe and zebra.
Over 300 species of birds have been sighted in and around Royal Tree Lodge, at peak season. Our summer from October to March is the best time with both Palaearctic and Intra-African migrants. Keen birders should be able to see at least 50 – 70 species in a day and have the opportunity to add new species to the lodge’s bird sighting list. The record thus far is 130 species in a 24 hour period!
Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi game reserve lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and was named after Chief Moremi of the Batawana tribe. Guided by a professional safari guide for big game viewing you will travel from Royal Tree Lodge by road in a game viewing vehicle.
Travel by toad from Royal Tree Lodge to a mysterious and ancient place! Tsodilo Hills is a rare and unique place with an atmosphere of intrigue and mystery. The word Tsodilo is derived from the Hambukushu word 'sorile' which means “sheer”. The Tsodilo Hills are one of the most historically significant rock art sites in the world – it boasts 500 individual sites representing thousands of years of human habitation.
Mokoro Day Tour
A mokoro is a dugout canoe. Travel by road from Royal Tree Lodge to the Mokoro station to meet your local guide and poler. From there, get in your own personal Mokoro & head out on a safari of the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the tip of the delta and witness a combination of aquatic game, amazing bird species, breathtaking landscapes, and tranquil sunsets. Glide along crystal clear waters and take in the aroma of the colorful water lilies in this pristine & tranquil paradise!

Royal Tree Lodge has a full-time partnership with the nonprofit work of the locally based NGO, Love Botswana. This local trust operates more than 20 community-based programs for children, youth and adults. Visiting or volunteering at Love Botswana's many community-based programs in Maun has created some of the most meaningful opportunities for those who have visited or volunteered.
With a staff of over 65, including 15 social workers and social work aides, there is something for everyone to do, even families! Whether a few hours, a day, or more, visiting Love Botswana is a way to give back to the community, crowning your Safari experience with the best part of Botswana- the people and culture.
To be clear – this is not a “show and tell” experience, but rather an opportunity to share in the rich culture that is Botswana and link with the heart of the Nation through the people.
Many of the people we work with represent the families who work in the safari industry to create the magical experience for those coming on Safari from around the world. We provide support to them while their loved ones are away for months at a time.
